GamCare to reveal gambling-related issues this Christmas  

New research from GamCare indicates that individuals with gambling problems are more likely to engage in gambling this festive season compared to last year. A recent YouGov survey involving over 4,000 UK adults, commissioned by the charity, revealed that 73% of those experiencing gambling-related issues say they are more inclined to gamble during Christmas than at other times of the year, an increase from 37% the previous year. Advisers on GamCare’s National Gambling Helpline emphasize that the holiday season can be particularly challenging for those facing gambling struggles, as well as for their affected family and friends. Last December, the Helpline experienced a 39% rise in calls and online chats compared to the same month the year before, marking the busiest Christmas season on record. Additionally, the survey emphasizes: More than half (53%) of individuals gambling at problematic levels admit to using money meant for gifts, food, or other holiday expenses for gambling. Nearly 60% of those gambling at harmful levels are more inclined to gamble during the holiday season, whereas only 6% of those without gambling issues do the same. Among those gambling at harmful levels, over half (53%) report heightened feelings of stress or anxiety from gambling, and 56% feel that gambling contributes to their sense of isolation. Additionally, two-thirds (65%) of people gambling at harmful levels worry that someone in their family or household may overspend on gambling during the holiday season. In contrast, this is one in 25 (4%) of those who are not. Mark Weiss, the Deputy Chief Executive at GamCare, stated: The holiday season can be challenging for individuals dealing with gambling problems, but it can also be a valuable chance to discuss the struggles you’re encountering. Our recent research indicates that more individuals with existing gambling problems are reporting a greater likelihood of gambling during the holiday season compared to other times of the year.
