High-Stakes Poker Lawyer Tom Goldstein Out of Custody But Can’t Use Crypto

A federal judge has mandated the release of Tom Goldstein from detention in Maryland following his recent arrest for purportedly breaching his bail conditions. Goldstein was taken into custody on Monday after authorities reported finding hidden cryptocurrency wallets that facilitated millions of dollars in transactions during the week. Goldstein, the leading figure at the Supreme Court of the United States and the creator of the well-known SCOTUSblog, claimed that he does not own the wallets and asserted that the government „erred.“ Today, Magistrate Judge Timothy J. Sullivan approved Goldstein’s release after assessing evidence provided by Goldstein that raises „sufficient doubt“ regarding his ownership of the two cryptocurrency wallets. Judge Sullivan had previously ordered Goldstein’s arrest after determining there was „clear and convincing evidence“ that he breached the conditions of his pretrial release and represented a flight risk. „Based on the information that Mr. Goldstein has now submitted … the Court is no longer persuaded, by clear and convincing evidence, that he violated his release conditions,“ Judge Sullivan stated on Thursday. Nevertheless, he also expressed that the Court is „highly suspicious“ about Goldstein’s use of cryptocurrency while under the conditions of his release. „There is plenty of proof that Mr. Goldstein has been and continues to be an advanced and regular user of cryptocurrency for many years,“ he stated. „He has utilized cryptocurrency, or instructed others to do so for him, to settle expenses ranging from gambling debts to high-end watches for several women.“ Tom Goldstein. Goldstein Refutes Claims of Holding Crypto Wallets. Judge Sullivan updated Goldstein’s release terms, mandating him to report all financial accounts and cryptocurrency wallets. He also stated that Goldstein „shall not access, receive, send, or transfer any cryptocurrency.“
